Stuckato

Short bursts. Real progress.

We are trying something for four weeks in October.

Melisande is running a small pilot with about twenty of her pupils. This page explains what it involves, exactly what we record, and how to say no. It takes two minutes to read and nothing happens until you say yes.

What your child does

After each lesson Melisande writes down what to work on and for how many minutes a day. Stuckato turns that into a short guided session for each day of the week, in her own words. Your child taps what they worked on when they finish. That is the whole thing: a few minutes a day, then a tick.

Which group is your child in?

Melisande will tell you which one. Some pupils use the app and some keep a paper diary instead. Both groups matter equally, and we cannot tell whether the app helps without both.

On the app

Nothing for you to fill in

Your child does a short guided session each day and taps what they worked on. The app records all of it by itself.

You can skip straight to what we record.

On the paper diary

One short form a week

Your child writes down the minutes they practised each day. Then, on the evening before each lesson, Melisande sends you a form that takes about a minute: the minutes for each day, and these two questions.

  • How ready does your child feel for tomorrow's lesson? 1 to 5.
  • How much did they want to practise this week? 1 to 5.

Those are word for word the two the app asks its own group, which is the only reason the two groups can be compared at all.

What we record

Everything below is either logged by the app as your child uses it, or entered by Melisande after a lesson. There is nothing else.

WhatWhere it comes from
Days practised and minutesThe app's own clock, or the paper diary
Which sessions were finishedTapped by your child at the end of a session
A sentence about how it wentOptional, written or spoken by your child
Two questions once a weekHow ready they feel for the lesson, and how much they wanted to practise. Both 1 to 5
Attendance, and two ratingsMelisande, after each lesson: prepared, and progress since last time
A short recording, sometimesOnly if your child chooses to record a play-through for Melisande
A track with a backing, if switched onOff during the pilot. If Melisande switches it on later, your child can put chords under a recording and keep up to five a week, privately. Under 13, saving the file to a phone needs you to type the account email.

Who sees it

Melisande sees her own pupils' data and nothing else. She is their teacher; this is the same information she would gather in a notebook, kept more tidily.

When we look at whether the pilot worked, names are removed first. Each pupil has a short code, and the file we actually read has the code and not the name. The list linking the two stays in Melisande's account and is not shared with anyone, including Emre.

Nothing is sold, nothing is advertised against, and no data goes to anyone outside the two of us.

What we do not do

×We do not score your child's playing. The app never tells a child they played something wrong. The one feature that listens compares a recording to Melisande's own playing of the same bars and shows her where they differ. She decides what it means.
×We do not rank pupils against each other. There is no leaderboard and no comparison between children.
×We do not use it to chase you. If a week goes badly it is information, not a telling-off.

The rule we wrote down in advance

Agreed before the pilot started, so we cannot move the line afterwards

If 60% of pupils are still practising twice a week in week four, we keep going. Under 50% and we stop, and we say so publicly.

Twenty pupils over four weeks is a pilot, not a trial. We will report what changed and what we think caused it. We will not claim it is proof of anything.

Saying no, or stopping

Taking part is entirely up to you, and saying no changes nothing about your child's lessons. They carry on exactly as before.

You can stop at any point, without giving a reason, by telling Melisande. We will delete your child's data if you ask. If you stop partway through we will leave out what was collected up to then, unless you are happy for us to keep it.

If your child is young, the account is held by you. They still do the practising themselves.

Questions

Ask Melisande at a lesson, or email hello@stuckato.app. If something on this page is unclear, that is worth telling us too, because the next parent may have the same question.
